Volcanic Interruption Update
Dated 20/04/2010 by J Wood
Although the planes are now back in the sky, the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull is still causing severe disruption to passengers. The BBC reports that in the last six days over 95,000 flights have been cancelled across Europe and whilst British Airspace tentatively re-opens and long haul flights start to land and take off, those looking to travel on short haul flights seem certain to face further delays.
Indeed, the return to flight may well be short lived, as The Daily Mail has warned that scientists report that the volcanic ash could return at any time and that it is normally for volcanoes to go through 'quiet spells' before resuming bursts of violent eruptions. There is also the possibility that Eyjafjallajokull could set off its larger neighbouring volcano, Katla.
Amid all the confusion about flight regulations and plane safety, there are thousands of very real holidaymakers and travellers desperate to get home. Whilst some battle it out on overcrowded trains, others opt for the more luxurious options, such as private coach hire.
The Government has finally started to react to the airspace crisis and even deployed Three Royal Navy warships to rescue stranded Britons. The BBC also reports that the Government plans to send 150 private coaches to Madrid to help shuttle back those who have been diverted on long haul flights.
For many all they can do is follow guidelines, check if planes have be cancelled and if so, do not travel to the airport. Instead, search out intelligent alternatives, such as private coach hire.
