Oxford Castle: An Alternative Half-Term Adventure for Kids
Dated 17/02/2010 by J Wood
Organising events to keep children occupied during the school holidays can distress many a parent, especially where the children concerned fall into that awkward category of being too old for this yet too young for that. The problem is compounded further for schools that aim to provide fun breaks for their pupils to mark the end of term. However, with a little planning any such trip can prove extremely successful.
Private coach hire parties to the Creepy Crawlies event at Oxford Castle, for example, enthused many children over the Valentine's Day weekend (13-14th February). The castle's mini-monsters roadshow gave kids the opportunity to handle all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures, from giant African snails to Madagascan hissing cockroaches. Although the Creepy Crawlies event is now over, groups of parents who are looking to entertain their children in a slightly less than ordinary manner over half-term may still wish to use private coach hire to access Oxford Castle, which has plenty to offer besides the occasional bug, slug and hissing cockroach.
In fact, Oxford Castle is a hit with children and adults of all ages, as its costumed character guides reveal the building's curious past in an immensely entertaining way. Visitors to the castle can climb the St George's Tower to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Oxford, descend the 900-year-old underground crypt (which is not necessarily suitable for younger children) and experience life as an 18th century prisoner in the notorious Debtors Tower and D-Wing prison.
