Do A Runner - 2010 Virgin London Marathon
Dated 15/04/2010 by J Wood
There is just enough time left to get a bit of last minute training in, if you are running the Virgin London Marathon on 25th April 2010. As the event edges ever closer, excitement and anticipation is building for both the runners and the spectators, many of whom are no doubt planning on doing nothing more strenuous than hopping on a private coach hire to London for the day!
The 26 miles and 385 yard Marathon Route has been established since 1981 and the event grows bigger each year, with the average number of runners competing edging towards thirty five thousand. All in the name of a good cause, Virgin took over sponsorship of the London Marathon in 2008 and since the marathon began, over three hundred million pounds has been raised for charity.
Runners of the gruelling course spend months in training, with many serious athletes and celebrities to be found in amongst the herd. 2009's winner was Samuel Wanjiru from Kenya who set a course record time of 2:05:10. The female winner for 2009 was Irina Mikitenko from Germany, who enjoyed her second victory in a row with a time of 2:22:11.
