British Airways Strike could Bring Half Term Chaos
Dated 01/06/2010 by J Wood
Just as the drama of the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano started to settle, air travellers are set to face fresh disruption over the half term break as British Airways cabin crew go on strike. The planned five day strike by cabin crew started at on midnight on May 30th and is expected to last until 3rd June 2010. This follows early strike action in May and precedes a proposed third strike period from 5th June - 9th June
The BA staff are taking action in relation to cuts in staff benefits and disagreements over wages and staffing levels. It is thought that those facing disruption may turn to corporate coach hire in a bid to get to their destinations. Whilst many may have to rethink their half term holiday plans, those hoping to support England's journey to South Africa may face even worse delays.
Where corporate coach hire can step in and save a domestic travel situation, the proposed third aircraft crew strike will most certainly interfere with the plans of fans hoping to travel to South Africa for the World Cup. Just days before the biggest football tournament ever, many football supporters may find themselves stuck at home in front of the television, rather than in the stands supporting their home team.
The conciliation firm, Acas is hoping to find a way forward between British Airways and Unite, the flight attendants union. Whereas talks have failed up to this point, a representative for Unite said that striking union members would return to their posts if their benefits were reinstated.
